The story of King George Field Indoor Bowls Club has always been about bringing people together.

Over the years, the club here in Chessington has been a bustling hive of local life. Today, our community of 260+ members continues to carry that torch, maintaining the perfect balance between competitive prestige and a welcoming, down-to-earth atmosphere.

A modern comeback

Like many great sports and social hubs, we faced our toughest test in recent history following the Covid pandemic. A team of dedicated volunteers and a forward-thinking committee put their heads together to launch a major club recovery.

They stripped away the stuffy, old-fashioned rules of yesteryear and reimagined what a modern bowls club could look like.

We have transformed from a traditional sports club into a lively, multi-generational community centre where you can learn a technical game from qualified coaches, listen to live bands, shoot some pool, or grab a quick drink or leisurely pint of real ale with friends.

Tribute to Jim Scott, Founder Member and Past President

It is with deep sadness and great respect that we mark the passing in 2026 of Jim Scott, a pillar of the King George Field Indoor Bowling Club.

Jim was more than just a dedicated member; he helped to lay the foundations of the community, camaraderie, and sport we enjoy today in Chessington. Jim’s vision and steady leadership as a Past President guided the club through vital chapters of its history, always upholding the values of fairness, warm hospitality, and keen sportsmanship.

Whether encouraging new bowlers taking their first delivery on the carpet or offering wise counsel off the rink, Jim’s presence was a constant source of warmth and reassurance. His enthusiasm for the green and his tireless devotion to the club’s welfare earned him the enduring admiration of every member who had the privilege to share a game or a quiet word with him.

Jim’s legacy remains woven into the very fabric of King George Field. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and held in high honour across the Surrey bowling community and beyond.

FACILITIES

The green
Our playing 'green' is a Dales Pro-weave carpet on laser-levelled boards, and we have six expertly maintained rinks, so there’s excellent availability.

Bar and catering
Our fully licensed bar is open every day during the lunch period and throughout the evenings, while Terry Bainbridge, our longstanding in-house caterer, serves delicious hot and cold food.

There’s a reason Sundays are our busiest day – our Sunday lunches are massively popular. As for value, you will love our food and drink prices, which you would find hard to beat in a pub or restaurant.

Private gatherings
Our club has an excellent function space that can accommodate up to 95 people (80 seated) with a full catering service provided. It’s the perfect venue for private parties, wedding receptions, conferences and any kind of celebration or gathering you can think of. As a member, you are entitled to a discount on the hire cost.

Formal meeting room
We have a meeting room that can seat up to 18 people, ideal for clubs, associations and networking groups. We are the proud home of Surbiton Rotary Club, and there would be a warm welcome for any other local organisations who wanted to take advantage of our meeting spaces.

BOWLING FOR ALL

Wicked Wednesdays
If you are a parent looking for a way to entertain the kids over the long summer months, take advantage of our Wicked Wednesdays. Over a six-week period, for just £5 a head, children of school age can escape from their screens and social media and experience some real-world play and social interaction.

Blind bowling
We invite blind or visually impaired people to experience the joy of bowling with our expert assistance and specialised coaching.

Bowlathon and food bank
Once a year, usually around February, we hold a Bowlathon to raise money for charity. On an ongoing basis, we run a food bank at the club, with donations sent to the needy in our community.

SESSION TIMES

The club is open from 8.30pm to 10pm every day of the week, so you can bowl to your heart’s content. You just need to pre-book your rink. In the early part of your membership, it’s a good idea to try the ‘ballots’ which are held at different times on Mondays to Thursdays.

Here’s how it works: Arrive and sign in at least 15 minutes before the stated start time and then take one of the discs that determine which rink you are playing on, your team (Red or Black} and the position you are bowling. It’s a good way to introduce you to the competitive game, learn the etiquette and meet other club members.

Practice sessions
All rinks are normally available seven days a week for practice sessions between 8:30am and 10am, and from 6pm to 7pm. All practice sessions have a reduced rink fee - see the Membership page for more details.
